MARRIAGE: From one of the Detroit, Michigan newspapers, for Fri, 15 Jun, 1962, pg. D-1:
Golden Night: 205 Couples Wed 50 Years Guests at Gala Ball. You could see it in their eyes. There was pride there, and wisdom and the love that can bind two people as one for 50 years and more.
Thursday night belonged to them, and while strains of the circus music next door filtered gently into Cobo Hall's ballroom, 205 Detroit-area couples sat quietly, thinking of 50 years of married life, while the noise of a Golden Wedding Ball swirled about them.
These couples, representing 10,648 years of marriage, were guests of honor at the ball sponsored by the Kundig Center and the City of Detroit. The years weighed heavily on a few shoulders, and as some couples walked slowly through the glass doors, they clung tightly to each other. It was not hard to believe that pain and sorrow had dwelt with them. But for this night, at least, they were happy among old friends--and with each other. And if there had been guests of honor, they surely would have been Mr. and Mrs. William H. Quick, of 22333 Raymond, St. Clair Shores. On Feb. 22, they had celebrated 65 years as husband and wife. Now, at 87 and 83, they could think back to that winter day of 1897 at Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, where they had recited those final vows. Too quickly, the evening moved to a close, and the Golden Jubilarians moved to the ballroom's center aisle, where they received the applause of the crowd in a Grand March. As they filed out, it seemed that the pride, the wisdom, the love, may have grown a little deeper, the step a little surer.

From Page 255, Vol. 1, Chapter XXXII.:

----"Frederick Miller, a German from Northampton County, was the proprietor of the village of Millerstown, but did not enter the township until a later period. --- At Millerstown the first post-office in the township was opened in 1831 by Frederick Miller, in the days when every package or letter was receipted to the sender, and the date of its delivery, its destination and the amount of postage paid, reported to the department at Washington. Subsequently the office at this point was discontinued; it was again established in 1873 under the name of Canby, the year the gallant general of that name was treacherously killed."
RECOLLECTIONS: Oral, personal reminiscences of Mrs. William H. Quick on 9 Feb 1962 and 13 Aug 1962 :
"My gr-grandfather, Frederick Miller came from Germany and settled in Pennsylvania. He named the place he settled in Columbia County, Millertown. He then went back to Germany and spent a year or so there before returning to Millertown to live. William Miller was his son & my grandfather. William Miller's son, Alfred Miller was my father.
RECOLLECTIONS: From Letter written by Mrs. William H. Quick in April, 1963:
"My grandfather (William Miller) settled Frederick's estate as Administrator. Frederick had no will. Lola Miller Oman got this information at the Bloomsburg, Columbia County, Pennsylvania courthouse. My grandfather often told me about his father's library - was High German and none of his family could read the books, not even my grandfather, so they burned them."
COUNTY HISTORY-CEMETERY: The following letter from Eugene M. Hock, Rte 1, Catawissa, Pennsylvania was written on 18 Mar 1968. It is quoted in its entirety.
"Sir: In answer to your letter of September, 1967: I will give you what details of Fredrick (sic) Miller I have run across. Up to now I have not made a special effort to follow the Miller name.
"My first contact was from Columbia County history in connection with Elizabeth Miller Thomas daughter of Fredrick Miller, who was a great-great-grandmother on my mother's side. He is also mentioned in Columbia County history as establishing a post office at Miller-town in 1831, which was later named Canby. Beer's maps of 1876 lists the area as Miller's District #1.
"I am enclosing a poor snapshot of F. Miller's gravestone in what is known as Vanderslice Cemetery, located in Hemlock Township, close to the Shortway approach from Rt. 42. I could find no marker for his wife Elizabeth. 1850 Census lists her as 68 years at that time.
"Tax Records at the Courthouse in Bloomsburg would indicate when he came to Columbia Co. Beer's History says he came from Northampton Co., Pennsylvania.
"One possible source of information would be a set of volumes:
"Pennsylvania German Pioneers," by R. B. Strassburger. The copies I saw were in the National Archives in Washington, D.C., and were a collection of old passenger lists of German immigrants. In those volumes I found the arrival of the first of the Hock family, and was able to trace them thru six generations with the help of the before-mentioned "History of Columbia and Montour County," by J. H. Beers.
" Hoping I have been of service, I remain,
E. M. Hock"
